The Runner

If I don't keep walking forward
I know I'll come running back
So I try to trust my strides
And try to keep my shoulders back,
To keep going forwards harder
If you keep having to stop
I'll be jogging walking crawling--
Keep moving 'till I've dropped,
If I stop for just a second
All those memories catch up
So I just keep pushing through it
Every cramp and every bump,
I've got blisters on my heels
Lactic acid in my calves
I've got pulls and tears and calluses--
Sweat running down my back,
It's not that I'm running from my past
Or towards what's coming ahead
I'm running for fear of feelings
I'm running to clear my head,
Because the closer I stand next to you
The closer I want to be
But for both of us, I won'took back
Please don't run after me.
