Because I am Short

Because I am short
I am told things many times over like
“Wow you’re so short!”
Or “Oh you’re adorable”
Or “What a cute little thing you are!”
I didn’t know I was a thing
I didn’t know I was some kind of puppy
I didn’t know I was an inhuman object to squeal at

Because I am five foot zero
My body is public property for others to hug without asking
Because I am tiny
You can pat my head and speak to me as if I were five
Because I am little
Feel free to look down on me; in more ways than one
Because I am small
It is fine to make fun of my height and weight

When I was a young girl
I believed I could be strong
If wanted to
Leave a room with a lingering sense of authority
If I wanted to
When I grew up I would have a voice
But apparently I cannot
Because I am short
