my grandmother steals sharks’ teeth
off the sand, hushing the water’s hisses,

& my mother strains octopus ink drop-by-drop
to smudge across the eyelids of her daughters,
the shrieks of cephalopods sending ripples seawide,

& my smallest sister says mangrove trees
are fairy forests, but i still snag their sprigs,

ink slipping down my cheeks like saltwater
and teeth wrapped round my neck like pearls —

the tropics’ most wanted thief.
