I didn't realize the sadness

Coursing through your veins

Spreading like dark ink on paper

I didn't realize that you had changed

I hadn't seen you in years

Because of our feuding mothers

I didn't realize

I didn't realize when your family had to hide the knives

I didn't realize when you were sent to that

state-funded, bright, no hoodie-strings allowed place

I didn't realize before it was too late.

The author's comments:

Someone very close to me in my family was depressed and suicidal and was put in a mental hospital. I didn't really think much of it at the time. But later on it hit me like a freight train that I could have lost him.
