She writes lightly

just in case

she makes a mistake

she can erase

and no one will know

that she isn't

She has sunburn on her scalp

from the blistering heat

of her thoughts

so she wears

a baseball cap

even on cloudy days

In school one day she was asked

to take off her hat

but her hat stayed on her peeling head

as she signed a detention slip

with a signature written

so lightly

it was as if

she was planning to

erase her name

The author's comments:

I've always enjoyed observing peculiar behaviors of people . It's a hobby of mine to formulate stories about them. In school I saw a girl writing with hardly any pressure to her pencil point, and I deduced that she was insecure. I transformed this idea into a poem. I think that's what poetry is all about- realism mixed with hyperbole.
