I taste blood on my tongue
I feel you in my lungs,
like cigarette smoke,
when I breath—
shallow,
empty air

I feel you in my bones,
a filth
I can’t scrub clean
not even from
the surface of my skin,
where you rise and
turn me black and blue
all over

I see you in the streets,
in the city lights
surrounding me
and I feel the heat
of the bodies pushing past,
and world getting
a little too bright

I hear your voice
in the background
of all my conversations,
talking over me
just a little bit louder—
just a little bit better

and
I can’t stop
because everywhere I turn
there you are,
like
you were never

gone
