The Daily Grind MAG
You didn’t like coffee
The way I would wrap my hand
around the mug instead of your arm
as we walked
You didn’t like how I shook as caffeine warmed my blood
Try decaf, you would nag
As if I only required the taste
And not the energy it provided
For the nights I stayed up to worry
You thought the problem
With me was my dependency
You thought coffee made my breath smell
As you left your own bitter kiss
on my forehead
Now that I’m remembering it,
You hated every Sunday morning.
The ambrosial air filling the kitchen
As my daily ritual came to life
I suppose I could have switched to tea
The same boost with a softer trace
But my fleeting time with you
Was too bitter to take the risk
