you were shining and new,
no dents in your side
we were partners in crime-
from dusk til midnight.
you were colorful in my hands,
and i held you tight

you’d had a few hues,
under your belt
from green to purple,
black to red
(and, a few times back again)
but now when you smile,
your teeth are crooked,
splayed wide
you wear silver crowns
(they’re not even in style)
and even so broken,
you don’t even bleed that red,
you so admired.

you met
my kitchen sink,
then,
in the dead of night,
it broke your teeth
and let your smile
gape wide
