"And though she be but little, she is fierce."- Shakespeare

Young female, black.
Young female, black.
Young female, hungry.
Young female, exhausted.
Young female, not wanting to be defined by the melanin in her skin, I'm a
Young female, struggling.
Young female, pre-diabetic.
Young female, forgetting to take her pills because she's constantly on the go, she's a
Young female, alone.
Young female, pregnant.
Young female, afraid.
Young female, believing dreams are for little girls with fairy wings and princess dresses, I'm a
Young female, writing.
Young female, thinking.
Young female, learning that our world is divided into great and small, rich and poor, she's a
Young female, crying.
Young female, laughing.
Young female, breathing.
Young female, working herself to death in hopes for a better future, I'm a
Young female, discouraged.
Young female, disheartened.
Young female, discovering our world is not the friend she once thought it would be, she's a
Young female, wiser.
Young female, happy.
Young female, inspiring.
Young female, not allowing herself to be defined by the melanin in her skin, I'm a
Young female, beautiful.

The author's comments:

This poem was inspired by an experience I had. I was with my boyfriend, who is Caucasian, and a police officer, also Caucasian, drove up to us in the parking lot. He questioned us and took our ID. Then, he spelled out my name, only my name, and said into his little speaker, "Young female, black." It was a minor happening, but I was disturbed. I am so much more than a "Young female, black."
