my mother and i
do not agree on laughter.

she laughs high and quick
at things of joy or of celebration.

she throws her head back
and she claps.

i laugh lower and slowly
and at inconsequential things

things like embarrassment
or misplaced fear.

though, with this in mind,
we sometimes find a common ground.

in our dim lit apartment
we find company is cups of tea

or cups of wine
and sweet laughter

at nothing in particular,
but just at how sweet life can be.
