Knock.

I gave you the key to unlock-
Every quiet thought I’ve ever had.
I gave you my full attention,
And still, you didn’t accept it.
I want you to take my words-
And treasure their existence.
I want you to grasp my future-
Inside the arms you used to hold me.
It isn’t butterflies I feel when you-
Touch my hand or smile at me.
A thunderstorm rages inside my stomach-
Threatening to spew its contents-
And shame me into a quiet stupor-
While you just stand and watch.
You’re too afraid to speak to me while-
I’m too afraid to look back at you.
We both hide our feelings inside paper bags-
That we ball up and toss in the garbage-
As if they were nothing more than fragments-
Of our brains that couldn’t be spoken aloud.
If you promise to look at me again,
If you promise to love me-
I will open the door to my soul-
And give you everything knocking on it.
