The Red Planet

Come, and lay down next to me
in this bed that’s far too big
for only one, and tell me
ev’rything there is to hear.

Fact or not is no matter.
Weave me intricate tales of
how your class time turned into
racing your car in the street
turned into counting sheep ‘tween
the stars turned into taking
a rocket ship to Mars, just
to remember you left me
behind and had to come back.

I’ll start packing right after
you lay down and hold me close
and speak to me of all the
opportunities on Mars.
Reveal to me the wonders
of the red planet before
I step foot on the surface.

Tell me what it is that you
love about that red planet
so that I may love it too,
just the same as you do, dear.
Tell me of your vision for
the world before us so that
I might see it through your eyes.

Come, and lay down next to me
in this bed that’s far too big
for only one, and tell me
ev’rything there is to hear.

Fact or not is no matter.
Let me hear your voice tonight.
Have it carry me to sleep,
where I’ll dream of you and me
and hopes that we both dare keep.
