I am every black woman
I am the complete and utter symbol of my mother
Strong
Beautiful
I am Negro

I am not white
And have no desire to be
But because I am not white
America herself shackles me
Considering me as a modern-day slave
Instead of picking cotton
I pick the damaged dreams of those before me

Failure no longer is an option
Because Obama said “Yes, we can!”
A black man with a strong woman at
his right hand to show
“Yes, we can!” to black excellence
We set the stage, to stand up
to America
No longer shackled
No longer her slave.

Your theme is awesome, as are your recurring phrases to emphasize points. Your best line is "instead of picking cotton/I pick the damaged dreams of those before me." I actually don't see a lot of discussion about race on TeenInk, so thank you for bringing it into the spotlight in this beautiful poem.
