I Hear America Screaming

I hear America screaming

(Not singing)

Lost are the tunes of Whitman and Hughes

The screamers hold stale coffee in their fists

America runs on Dunkin

They are citizens

They vote and pay taxes

America runs on taxes

that don't pay the debt

and a longing to recreate

that one golden age

They speak to robots in their phones:

What is Manifest Destiny?

I  am  sorry  I  do  not  under  stand  the ques  tion

Where is the land of the free?

Lo  ca  tion  not  found

Satisfied, they sip their stale coffees

and forget why

they were screaming in the first place

And, then, I hear America's silence
