Sea Anemones

I watched that flower bud and bloom
Never once blinking until the last petal had fallen
beautiful; like the ocean at sunrise
Sun flickering like glitter through the waves
And through my veins
As I floated in the swells
Starfish legs creeping and
Tickle of sea anemone tentacles
That will never know rain.
Hushed echoes of ghosts
In the dark world in front of the sun
Flower petals falling onto me
In the surf, eyes closed
Breathing in salt and flowers
I opened my eyes
A dead flower in my hands
Crumbling petals falling to cracked pavement
Floors and ceilings
Crusted with salt and shadows
And a stain that looked like the sun
