He was great at the start.
Gave me his time and his heart.
Held my hand across the street,
Helped me stay clean while I would eat.
In my innocent ages he was just as innocent.
We grew up together,
Until we didn’t.
As I got older,
He got colder.
His perception of me changed,
And nothing was the same.
We had an argument.
I may have just needed to vent.
But he forgot how to listen,
His eyes rid of their glisten.
He became a beast
Who didn’t know the difference between his daughter and a punching bag.
He slaps my face,
And he knocks me down.
Then he apologizes,
And I turn back around.
We start over, new.
Forgetting this moment.
But what we try to forget never leaves us.
For a few months, everything is jolly.
Spending time together,
Laughing for what seems like forever!
But the good things in life don’t last forever.
Tension is rising.
My words internalizing.
His words towards me,
Downsizing.
Things build up and up,
Until I finally say something.
He blows up.
He punches my stomach,
And kicks me to the ground.
Then he apologizes,
And I turn back around.
We start over, new.
Forgetting this moment.
But what we try to forget never leaves us.
I don’t need to repeat myself.
We go through the same stages.
Only the good times get shorter,
And the abuse lengthens.
It happens over and over again,
Until I can’t stand it.
I snap back,
And I know right away that nothing good will ever come out of this.
He punches my throat,
And he throws me to the ground.
I feel cement on the back of my head,
Over and over again,
Until I can’t turn back around.
And this time,
I start over new.
In a new place.
Where I am safe,
And at peace.
