Boxed In

We are living in a box.
In denial
Of what’s outside
We live in fear of bad grades or
Losing a football game
While others live in fear of the next day
And the merciless horrors it may bring.

We are living in a box.
Without compassion
For those outside.
They are the white spaces in a story
They make up our world
But aren’t our priority
They are alone
But together
Where stars have never shone

We are living in a box.
Without hope
For those outside
Because we have given up
So we don’t care
But they need it more than us
They need it more than anything
They need it to will themselves
To live.

We need to open our box
Let it all in
Big
Small
Black
White
And give knowledge
Compassion
And hope to everyone.

And then
Only then
Do we have
A world.
