It came without warning
The reef was washed with evergreen waves
The evening sky was overcast with dread
Purple and red against grey and black
The sea growled with distress

I hid my fear behind my mask
The warm, soft tropics were overturn with grief
The island, my island, cried out
In the distance

I’m the last of my tribe
The raft rocked on the water
The rain gracefully twirled and danced
The wind giggled words of chaos
I refuse to forget

The island
My home that I love
I hear its cries
Over the raging waves

I
watched
it
tear
itself
apart
