Grinning
Happiness
Ecstasy of companionship
Loving family
Everything in place
Suddenly
The clear glass shatters
Hopelessness in the sunken eyes
Lives are flipped around
Never to be the same
The doctor walks in
Just another patient
Another life turned upside down
The pitiful smile
Twisting her face
It isn’t another kid
It’s you
No one else to take this away
This is your reality
Tears want to fall
But they’re trapped in a cell
A prison of emotion
It seems unreal
Reminded constantly
By the nagging
The ‘helpful’ comments
That widens the gaping pit
Despair
Building back up
Pushing past
Held back
Chained to the prison wall
Dreams can fly
But reality falls.
