I’ll tell you how I lost the Race--
One Second at a Time
The World spun around--someplace
He set the ticking Line.
The lurid, loud waves wash over
The untouched, tranquil Lane
Then I looked--over my shoulder--
And said, “He will not gain.”
But how I faltered, I know not.
There appeared--Boots of Lead,
Dragging the curving, crinkling Sand--
And Him fleeting--farther off
Till I reached the tocking Line
The World overturned--here--
And I--glanced--some strange Lifetime--
And He--no longer there--
