Semper Fi

I used to love the color Purple

Painted on my walls

Dyed onto my curtains

My beadspread

Everywhere I see,

Even the small stuffed animal,

I've had since I was three.

I've never hated so much

That organ that beats

In my chest.

My hands shaking and outstretched

To recieve the purple heart

You aren't able to grab.

But I can hear it,

Your voice inside my head,

"Take it baby sis."

So I mumble under my breath

Even as I cry:

"Semper Fi,

Semper Fi,

Semper Fi."
