Little girl in footie pajamas
Laying down by the window
The clock reads 8:00
Beginning to count the stars
“Nothing is impossible,”
Her mommy used to tell her
And so she tries every night,
And decides it is impossible,
Like counting the white sprinkles on a blue-frosted cupcake.
Crawls back into bed,
Eyes full of the Milky Way

Little girl in footie pajamas
Tiptoeing through the darkness
Looking for her very own face
Among the broken picture frames
Being careful, being careful
Not to step on the glass

Little girl in footie pajamas
Thinking about the stars in the sky that
Dance heel to toe
In time with the man in the moon
Wanting to join the party
Pretending to sleep
When her door is cracked open

and the light peeks through
