Robert Frost once wrote a poem about a
fork in the road.
He spoke of two directions in which he could go.
He voiced his decision to stray off the beaten road.
He decided to go down the less traveled road.
He claimed it made all the difference.
I have been told a thousand times
by a thousand people
That the same is true in life.
But that implies in life we have but two choices.
With 7 billion people on this planet,
Is it possible that there is a road less traveled?
Are there truly only two types of people?
Those who take the road less traveled
And those who don’t?
How can it be that, “I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference?”
What difference?
How can you take one road and say it was different?
How can you take one road and judge the other?
How can you take one road and claim you chose the better?
If I take the right road I may never know the left –
People can tell me of it but I will never have walked it.
If I take the right road those who took the left will never know it.
I can describe in immaculate detail the road I chose.
But unless they took it, they can never truly know.
So does this mean that I may take the less traveled road and one day find myself lost
In a sea of people tittering and giggling about their shared experience?
So does this mean that I may find myself truly alone in a crowd,
In a room of family and friends and still be filled with loneliness?
Or does this mean I can take the more traveled road and find happiness
Could the road most traveled be so for a reason?
If I find myself at this fork in the road of life
I wish to say I’d pick the less traveled –
But maybe it’s less traveled for a reason.
