the empty man

why is it that the man can sit there on a corner
praying for some change to phone
his jailed wife
so lonely
but we duck past the corner where the man sits and tell
ourselves it is his own fault
that his wife
can’t come home

why can we deny his pain and pleading eyes just so
we don’t dirty ourselves with
smoke his pain
as he sways back and forth, whimpers escaping from scabbed
lips that will
never heal

why do his eyes bleed saltwater and his voice fracture
when a stranger hurls down a
coin are they
felled angels
but no they are just humans with hearts that haven’t turned
completely to cold hard stone
why don’t we
ever cry

It's nicer to think dear, pretty thoughts and keep them in one's heart, like treasures. I don't like to have them laughed at or wondered over.
