"beauty is truth, truth beauty" - john keats

As I walk through the forest, I look and see
the many creatures that were here long before you or me,
the meadowlark and the chim-choo-ree.

I see the sun-- that primitive mother
who gave birth to all life on earth.
The deer and the demigod--
and I wonder, what is this all worth?

The air that we breathe is not our own;
we owe it to those silent, noble trees
we have always seemed to have a distaste for.
The earth we have conquered for ourselves,
have made a myth with our false meanings.

The author's comments:

An unfortunate consequence of humankind's "conquering" of the earth is that, rather than appreciating it's natural beauty, we decorate it falsely in our own stories.
