Dreams are true while they last, and do we not live in dreams?
~Alfred Lord Tennyson

I am the forgotten son,
Pushed aside and abandoned by family.
Circling and orbiting around them
On the very outskirts of home.
When they betrayed my trust
And cursed me with ‘Dwarf,’
Most thought it was my size,
Because I was too small.
So they had to put my spirit down like a dog,
As if they did not know
That I wear this heart on my chest
Because my heart and soul are bigger than this body!

But that was not it, no,
I was too ordinary for their simple little minds.
My different was not different enough
–too “Plain Jane,”
Not enough Mary Jane.
They wanted me to take them on a trip across the galaxy,
Show them the exotic and new,
Show them what they never seen before.
What they’ve only imagined in dreams and hallucinations!
But that was not for me.
That was not and is not me,
My different is as subtle as a sunset slowly creeping in
On the horizon until it’s all you can see.
But they could not see it.
Not with the super giants extraordinaire standing in front of me,
Overshadowing my timid unique
With their bold brilliance.

But this,
This is not about that.
This is about me letting you know,
That even though this exile has left me frozen,
I will let you into my frosty heart,
Let you climb to the top of my ice mountain mind,
Be bright enough for you to read your favorite book.
Because you understand what it’s like
For a broken home to be the only universe you know.
Because you know that this broken home is the only universe I know.
Because we both know that it doesn’t matter what else is out there,
This is the only universe we know,
The only universe we have!
It’s because you know what it’s like to almost be found and not,
You know that I’ve almost been found and not,
I’ve almost been found and not so many times!
I was almost found and not, until I was.

I was found and a young lady named me,
Me, after a god.
Because that god and me,
We both know what it’s like
To live on the outskirts of our own universe.
