Once there was a small sparrow,
Who didn’t learn how to fly.
Her father tried to teach her,
But all he did was try.
Try to give her the knowledge,
That he did not have to give.
Try to give her the courage,
That he did not carry within.
He tried to give her the hope,
Although his heart had died.
Of all the things he did not do,
At least she could say he tried.
He really tried to love her,
As he encouraged her from the nest.
He told her she could do it,
As she puffed out her little chest.
And as the sparrow spread her wings,
Eager to take flight,
He gave that little nudge,
And she closed her eyes tight.
But the little bird did not fly,
Instead she fell very fast.
There was no time to stop her,
There was no looking back.
And as she hit the ground,
He looked in utter surprise.
How could this have happened?
As she took her last breath she whispered,


The author's comments:

This is a piece about the stuggles of internal conflict I experienced due to issues I have with my father. I feel that though it is a somber tone, it is relatable to all of the teens that struggle with domestic abuse and/or absent parental experiences. It's a symbolic message of the continuous excuses we make for the people we love when they harm us, and how it can ultimatly lead to our own destruction.
