Favorite Quote:
"Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars." -- Vincent Peale

When I found you,
you found me,
like two pieces of a puzzle
fitting perfectly.
There were no missing parts.
We were a perfect masterpiece.
Others would envy what we had,
our many unforgettable memories.
That time of my life
was the life I loved.

But somewhere along the way,
I lost you,
as I followed the path everyone else took.
I looked back to find you,
but you had made your own path,
a path through thickets of thorns.
I tried to pull you back so you wouldn’t be hurt,
so those thorns wouldn’t pierce your delicate skin,
but you pushed me away,
you pushed me away for freedom and independence,
and our puzzle shattered.
Then you disappeared without a word,
and left me with half of a puzzle.
You left me searching for pieces
to fill those empty spaces only you could fill,
and now my pieces are torn and tattered,
alone in their box.

I wish I could have one last look
at the beautiful puzzle we once shared,
at the splendor of that time of our life,
because I still can't put the lid on that puzzle box.

The author's comments:

I wrote several poems inspired by Toni Morrison's Sula. This one was inspired by the friendship between Nel and Sula. It reminds me of the friends that I once had. Perhaps someday we will be friends again.
