The swirling winds breezed through the girl's golden locks
She sighed a deep breath of relief as she looked at the brightly lit sky
Constellations hung over her head like little paintings
The shadows of trees lay above her, embracing her

She felt deeply warm inside despite the chilly night
A small grin curved on her face as she stared over the twisted branches and bright lights
Little creatures trotted about the tranquil forest
The leaves crunching frightened the girl, alone in the dark

Her pale blue eyes glittered in the night as she whipped her head back

"Who's there?" a trembling voice escaped her lips

There was no response, and she turned back

She took a few steps forward, her footsteps echoing in the night

Closing her eyes, she imagined herself drifting through the wind

She spread out her arms and ran forward, letting the wind carry her wherever it went

More alive than ever, she opened her eyes and let go of all her worries

The thoughts, "I'm free, I'm alive and free!" repeated in her head continuously

Beautiful white teeth glowed in the night as she laughed under the window of stars

Happiness filled her veins, and she felt butterflies in her stomach

At last, she came to a stop and looked back down the path

Golden leaves covered the path that was once nothing but dirt

Before her, the sun started to settle down and she sunk

It was time to leave this paradise of pure magnificence

To finally leave her only place of happiness

To her, there was no such thing as home

This was her only hope to freedom, her great escape

Away from pain, misery, and drunken parents who abused her

Her struggles clouded her thoughts and attacked her

Now... she's free, she was leaving where she was meant to be

She was home.

The author's comments:

This piece represents a simple, calm state of mind in which I've always wanted to have, and it's always been a dream to be able to have such a mesmerizing experience like this. Because it was a long-term goal, I decided to use another "person" and imagine what it would feel like to be in such a calm environment as well as frightening. It was tons of fun writing this poem, I hope it speaks to everyone who reads this poem as much as it spoke to me.
