Forever is composed of nows. -Emily Dickinson

For so long the have hung by my side clumsily
I have had to teach them how to wave, when they see someone they know
To clap, when they have been impressed
To write, whenever they feel there is the need to
With practice, I have taught them to play music, to paint pictures and to turn pages

To hold
I never taught them how to do that
Taken by surprise, I had to figure it out right there, in the moment
And I found out that you and I, we fit like a jigsaw puzzle
Every finger interlaced with a sense of knowing

But they didn’t stay still, like I had taught them to do for so many years
Instead, they chose to feel
Gliding smoothly through unknown territory
Taking note of every edge, every curve and every corner

My hands now feel and hold
Your hands
Your neck and back
They have tried to memorize every inch of your face

My hands
Now feel and hold
And I wish that they could also remember
