The ocean calls out softly to me, though I’m a million miles away.
Breathing its salty breath in my ear, it begs me to come play.
In my mind I dance across the shores, sand beneath my feet.
The tide laps at my knees; I feel the ocean’s heartbeat.
Seagulls and splashing waves create a perfect harmony.
The kaleidoscope sunset touches everything I see.
Holding the seashell tightly against my ear,
The ocean spills her secrets so only I can hear.

Several years ago, my family and I took a vacation to Huntington Beach in California. I keep a photograph of my sister and I in the sand, along with some sea shells, near my desk so I can always see them when I’m writing. When I look at that picture, I remember a time before college admissions and work and all the craziness of high school. Picking up a seashell makes me feel like I’m twelve years old again, writing my name in the sand on a beach far, far away.
