The dead, cracked,
coffee black leaves
used to be beautiful.
They used to be colorful
and dipsy in the
wonderful fall
summer months.
Now they are rotten,
dead, cracked bones
that rip and tear at
any opportunity.
They are ferocious
beasts that beckon
to crumble under the
weight of the earth.
The dead leaves
remind me of our love,
what used to be
our love.
Until you took my heart
and squeezed it in
your right hand.
You dropped it;
let it fall.
You kicked my delicate
heart and
crushed it with your
long and tedious fingers.
Then my heart was
pitiful and abandoned.
The dead, cracked leaves
remind me of the fire
we once had in each other,
the lovely, passionate
fire we said would
never disappear
Until it did.
I stand pondering
about the broken
leaves until I hear a
gruff voice that says,
“Madam, the zoo
is closing.”
