We pass each other in the stairwell

And inside, a piece of me dies,

You and her stand pressed together

Gazing up at each other’s eyes In the way that we never have And never will,

You wave with one hand, absentmindedly not looking up from her

Where before there would have been a hug or a high five

And I immediately know that this will be just like

Every other girl that you date,

That she will take the part of your life

That used to belong to your friends

And that until you end it

We won’t see you

Then you will come back again for a little while,

Until you meet another girl that catches your eye.

And the cycle starts again

And I know that no matter what

It will never be me.

I guess I will just have to wait until

It all ends and we drift out of contact,

Sadly waving at each other as we walk in opposite directions.

Either that or,

Stop being friends,

But we used to be so close

that the thought

Physically wounds me

Like a dagger thrusting out of my gut.

I nod my chin in your direction and walk away.
