When my mother

was a little girl

she wielded a stick

and defended her sister

and all that their people stood for

from a boy who pulled her hair

and made fun of her accent

she charged at the boy

swinging her sword

with battle cries

tearing from her mouth

in thick, clumsy english––

"You hit my sister!"

she chased him away,

swatting at his head as he ran

and when he was gone

she comforted her sister

in the language

which came easily to them

and did not make them feel

like their tongues

were too thick

for their mouths

"Todo bien"
