The Mango Tree

Beneath the overbearing sun and into withered grass
they chance upon a dilapidated, neglected house.
Vines entangled the abode. The wood, rotten with termites,
gives shelter to abandoned animals nearby.
The pair, mother and child, stride down the path.
Their business lies not with the home, but with what’s behind it.
A lonely mango tree, grown
by its own ways of living, stands tall.
It’s fruit like
little shimmering rubies in the balmy light.
