When in high school your world
becomes small. Chairs and desks
under a low mouldering ceiling
that becomes the sky to you.
An elephant in the desert is
an ant, yet under a roof,
within four walls, gray wrinkled skin fills all,
covers your vision like a blindfold,
limits your periphery to the tip of your nose.

So it is with high school.
Trembling hands pluck hair and pinch skin
over a physics test
or missing homework.
