Do not wave your love like a banner from the mast
Do not have it blowing proudly in the wind for everyone to see
Or else she might see through it
Like a colorful majestic banner
Made of thin, cheap strings.
Instead, leave your love hidden in the pages of her favorite novel
Tuck it in drawers among the silver spoons and rusty knives,
Hang it some place where she will catch it's warm gaze when she looks in the mirror
Make it come in whispers and touches, when the sun is in full blaze,
Then after the sun has set,
After the couples have gone and light laid to rest,
Scream it from the top of your lungs
Make it burn make it strong
But make it the kind of thing that she could easily ignore if she wanted to
Like a golden needle in a sewing kit
Like a strange reflection of light on the side of a building
And watch her take it in her hands
Turning it over delicately
Letting its every intricacy fill the void of her irises
This is how you will know
That this
Is real
