Sorry
In Spanish class
We learned how to say “I’m sorry,” before we learned how to say “stop”
We learned “pretty” before we learned “help”
We learned “skinny” before we learned “I’m being attacked”
In fact, I still don’t know how to say those other things
So if a man insults me on the subway
“I’m sorry.”
If he slides his hand up my skirt
“I’m sorry.”
If he tries to rip off my clothes
“I’m sorry.”
But I’m beginning to think
No matter what words I know
No matter how I say it
No one will hear me
