She pads to the window,
Opens it a crack,
And lets the rain in.
Walking softly back to bed,
She curls under the covers,
Head laid gently on the pillow,
And listens to the pit-a-patting.
She knows she’s too old for it,
But she can’t help imagining…
Imagining she’s a mouse,
Curled in a nest of straw,
Safe at home.
Imagining she’s a fairy
In a little acorn house,
Spider-web blanket wrapped around her,
Swaying gently in the wind.

Her comfort from the rain stems back
To when she was a small child
And had nightmares about fire.
Back then, hearing rain as she fell asleep
Meant that she and her family were safe,
Because fires died in the rain,
And robbers were too afraid of falling
On the slippery roof.
In bed years later,
The rain still means she’s safe at home.
Nothing can hurt her.

Okay, quick intro to my praise: I live in Seattle, where the rain never ends. I hate rain with a vengeance; it's depressing and disgusting. However.... You made me feel safe. I was actually in bed when I read this, and I wanted to run and open my own window and cuddle up to the sound of rain. Big props to you for breaking through my preconceived hatred and sharing your emotion with me. One piece of constructive criticism: The very beginning of the second stanza felt out of the flow to me. It was like for a moment, you forgot you were doing poetry and wrote prose instead, just with unusual line breaks. Other than that--special!

You know, the ironic part of this poem is that when I originally wrote it, there was a second part about how the rain, on that specific night, made me think of tortured holocaust children, and their blood dripping through the drains on the floor. I decided not to include that… :)

Love it! This gave me a feeling of comfort and shelter from the world, while resting in one's own world, separate from all the rest. The imagery from a possibly scarring past was presented beautifully. This is a wonderful poem, good job!
