Shubho and Titli were as sad as could be,
They had to leave their home, their friends, and their school,
drop everything behind and start a new life.
In a place they’d never seen: The UAE
“I don’t want to leave mommy!”
begged the brother and sister,
their eyes shiny with teardrops
“please please please please don’t make me!”
“I’m happy here! Its not too hot and not too cold.
There’s lots of strong, green, trees and clear, blue, waters.
I’ve got many friends to laugh with, and nice books to read.
Race cars for me, Disney Princesses for Titli,
We’re so lucky; We never feel bored.”
Mommy patted my shoulder and said to me,
“Wait a little while, sweetheart; Please do not cry.
You two will see,
How nice a place to live is the UAE.”
Shubho and Titli stood quietly and watched
as the big, cardboard, box got filled to the top.
In went Shubho’s tee-shirts!
Within were Titli’s skirts!
Inside lay their two skates!
Every one of Mommy’s plates!
And all of Daddy’s ties!
So...I guess this is goodbye?
Higher and higher the boxes did rise,
Until they seemed to touch the sky.
too many to count,
Of all different sizes, they did sit about.
Some were tiny, others were large
round, square, in the shape of a heart.
Shubho and Titli looked left and looked right,
How big and how empty was their house in the night!
Gone were their tables!
Hidden were their shelves!
Invisible were their toys,
their books and their bells!
A big white truck pulled up to a stop
And out came some men who huffed a big puff
as they lifted our boxes from the ground to the car
They called,“Have a safe trip! Farewell and good luck!”
Big strong muscles yes, they did show
from carrying boxes heavy as a buffalo!
“Hurry! Hurry! We must not be late!
The plane will fly high, go up in the sky!”
Mommy ran down the steps, Daddy took both our hands,
we went, to a far, distant land.
I stared out my window; This was all much too fast!
I sobbed with the rain; drip, drip: tears d
n my cheeks
With a sigh and mommy’s kiss, I didn’t look back.
I was ready for my future; ahead of my past.
