The rain pitter-patters outside of my bedroom window
Gentle tap dancing against the earth
As I lay doing homework on my bedroom floor
I am smiling and tapping out the rain’s rhythm with my pencil
I am happy
Today we shared my white earbud headphones
You had the left ear one
I had the right
Our heads weren’t even three inches apart
But, despite the clichés, I could breathe as your hair brushed against my cheek
I can breathe around you
So you are a first for me
I am not shy and nervous like I usually am around those whom I have felt this way for
I hold my head high and feed off your confidence
I am strong now, and that makes me proud of myself
But let’s take a step back
You are honestly the most interesting person I have ever met
Every fact about yourself, every word you say, is so intriguing that I could spend days listening to your lips move as our eyes connect like two opposite ends of a bridge
Because when we talk we never break each other’s gaze
And I can breathe as we look at each other
