So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past. --F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

Remember the time when you slipped on your cat slippers
and danced with me in the kitchen.
How it was midnight, the milk was curdled, the ghosts     were swaying outside
until the raindrops shooed them away.
This was not like the music box where the ballerina stops twirling,
it was the baby monitor with the eternal song of breaths
You poured the wine so we could be royals, and the hours
were seamless, and every time we turned around there was beautiful
                                Cobalt blue china
                                                      embroidering the counter.
Red stains are blooming on the carpet. I think we spilled the wine      again, I think
I’m not going to dance anymore.
Tell me how the future will save us.
Our feet entranced by movement on the tiled floor.
Tell me I’ll never want you to go away.
