If I removed enough pieces of myself
To make room for your discomfort,
If I whispered softly enough
To set off your callous intonation,
If I held back every combative syllable hungry on my lips
And didn't talk about the holes loitering in my life –
If I eagerly dug more holes,
Shaved more skin,
Disposed more merit,
If I pillared my body below waves of debilitation
And anchored every calamity,
And swallowed oceans to save you from drowning,
Would we still be floating
In the same waters?
