So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past. --F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

Searching in the void that does not look like us
searching in the void

in the galaxy
in the void

Satellite machines and metronome beats
Your pale blue stardust eyes

and whispering hands
A game of cards

some rule about the Queen of Hearts
that sounds something like home

with an outlandish twist
and lingers

from word to
word

The first planetary movement
The shifting of something new

I have always longed
to land on some Prussian blue Neptune

engulfed by the rain shower
of diamonds

and comets
My body dissolving

into the changed gravity, new laws
I am like the Queen now

traveling above at the speed of sound
eyelashes spreading out the stars

bones riding atop asteroids
blood circling around Saturn

hair part of the solar flares
Go further

Go further
into the galactic void

tap the Milky Way with an index finger
and start it turning faster

Those black holes are coming for us
my astronauts

gaping maw of black ink
swirling throughout the void

don’t be frightened
Alive in nothing, we are

Alive in our cramped, no-gravity
card games

Your fingers and cool skin
rubbing the Queen’s angelic face

over and over again
in the void
