I’d like to say I’m in love with words.

In love with the pictures they paint,
With the sounds they echo,
With the love they give,

With the emotions they conjure.

I’d like to say I hate words.

Hate the power they have,

Hate the damage they’re capable of,

Hate the truth they unravel,

Hate the emotions the conjure.

I’d like to say words help us.
Help us express who we are,
Help us tell our stories,

Help us articulate ourselves,
Help us understand one another.

I’d like to say words ruin us.
Ruin ourselves,
Ruin one another,
Ruin our lives,
Ruin our world.

I’d love to say words are words.
There to make things easier,
There to make things harder,
There to make people,
There to ruin people,
There to free us,
There to trap us,
There to tell stories,
There for stories to be told.

There to be.

The power of words daunts me, but the beauty of words daunts me even more.
