My Husband's Waltz MAG

Cascading
down an erratic spectrum,
I fell brutally in love with gray,
and I shouldn't have.

You keep coming back
and I keep cupping my futile hands
over Post-It notes
while scribbling down instructions for you:
Fold me
back up
into swollen, purple triangles.
Forget
about
it
again.

And
it's not even like you're really mine,
but you always hit me like I am yours
or at least like you want me to be.

The author's comments:
In English class, we talked about how “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke can be interpreted as being about physical abuse. My teacher was saying things like "the father abused the little boy, but the little boy was just as much afraid as he was thrilled, and he still loved his father.” I could relate to this concept, so I wrote "My Husband's Waltz" from my own point of view and I included details from my own life. However, I realized that the speaker says what I imagine the mother in "My Papa's Waltz" might say, so I titled it "My Husband's Waltz."

I love this so much. It was short but yet so powerful.
