Atonement of the Wildflowers

Will you forgive me one more time?
I curse it so

my aching pride
It cowers behind my swollen heart,
wrinkled and reeking of formaldehyde

How many times have I held you?
For certain I am unsure.
But
you
count the times I’ve expelled you
to the ragged Eastern shores.

Forgetful you are not--
you believe in your own discretion

You claim:

that you will love the lilies flirting for your attention.

please forgive
the wildflowers’ clumsy pleas for your forgiveness
--I am a dandelion that grows without permission--
they only aim to pay you penance in the
unwarranted breach of your intentions

So your shivering hands betray you

when they search for a flame in my hips
Once it was inside of you
but you left it on my lips.

In a frigid, fickle May
--when the flowers bloomed too late--
(One could say) I loved you
And you the way

I trusted fate.
