When I was young/I used to think there was nothing under my skin but light/As I walk down the sidewalk of life/I scrape my knees/I bleed

He says
We all just forgot

He says
It’s because you move a lot

He says
You’re an outsider everywhere

If he had left it at that
I might not have cared

But then he says
Everyone should have a place in their hometown.

My hometown?

When I first moved over the sea
A monster fought and fought
To go back to the place I used to be

Then I forgot
That monster died
It may seem sad, but it’s not

The storm was gone
Things were looking up
But my time in my new home was done

They said
Are you happy to go home?

They said
This will be a good change

They said
We understand if you’re a bit sad

But they didn’t
To the foreign land I once called my own
Leave my new life?
I was forced to go

When I arrived to this place
My memory of it was scarce
To my surprise

Things here were not how they seemed
When my longing was fierce
When this land was my dream

It was now hard to identify
With this country’s beliefs
It seems the monster didn’t die

I will not be excused
For I have no sense of self
Because that couldn’t be further from the truth

I am a world traveler
And he can’t see his self-made cage
I will fit in everywhere

Each place I’ll go to see
I’ll take the pieces I like
And fit them into my identity

So before you say
That because my life is different it’s wrong

Before you say
Parents need to understand that a child needs stability

Before you say
My parents destroyed my chances at a future like yours

Just know

What my parents did for me
Was hard
But now is the best thing that it could be

For all kids who have moved around a lot and have a difficult time answering the question "Where are you from?".
