All I Ever Wanted
All I ever wanted was for our conversations
to come naturally and not be one sided,
Because it always seems I am the only one engaged.
I ask questions in order to capture your attention
but I can see the disinterest in your eyes when I speak.
All I ever wanted was to be close enough
To be considered more than a casual acquaintance
Who you see during the day and forget by night.
Though we daily see each other in a number of situations,
It's not enough to consider you anything but a stranger.
All I ever wanted was to be the reason behind your smile
That is infrequently shown and to have your laugh ring in my ears.
I have been successful in my numerous attempts but they are few
When compared to your other friendships. I am jealous
And envious of how open you are with them.
All I ever wanted was to be acknowledged for my hard work,
Though it may seem silly to say so. I only wish to feel validated
After my attempts to impress you so that every ounce of courage
I gathered beforehand did not go to waste and that the time
I stole from both of us was not worthless.
All I ever wanted was to be your friend
But after what I have gone through,
I don't think I will ever be.
