A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads only lives once.
--George Martin

Take the distance between you and me
Measure it with a silk ribbon and pull it tight
Tell our friends to hold the ends as we make the distance longer
We’ll pull the ribbon across the country
Through the seas on either side
Into foreign countries where people will ask what we’re doing and we’re just smile and say “Living”
We’ll meet at the other side of the world
I’ll hand you my ribbon and watch as you tie the ends together
You’ll pull the knot tight, trapping my heart inside where it’s supposed to be
“The world is in our hands,” you’ll say
I wonder where we’ll go and what we’ll see
To a land of long ago
Through galaxies far far away
You’ll take my hand and I’ll hold the ribbon
Pulling it tighter the farther away we go
Up through the trees higher and higher until we touch the sky
Until we can’t breathe
Then we’ll sink into the ocean deeper and deeper until we pass Atlantis
But not deep enough to drown
That’s not possible
Not when I’m holding the ribbon in my hands and you’re holding onto me
When our world slips you’ll put your hand over mine and pull the ribbon tighter
“Don’t let go,” we’ll whisper together
Over the moon and past the stars
Pulling the ribbon tighter and tighter
“Do you see Orion’s Belt?” You’ll ask and I’ll kiss the three stars as we pass by
Higher and higher because there’s no end
Not for us
Not today and not ever again
When our lives hit the borderline of our last breath we won’t call it “the end”
But before we go we’ll pull the ribbon tighter
And hand off the ends to the ones who come after
They’ll pull their ribbon over ours to hold it all together
Then I’ll take your hand in mine and we’ll float on to forever
And that’s where we’ll be in the heart of time
